THE MICO UNIVERSITY COLLEGE






HISTORY


The Mico University College is an institution of higher education in Kingston, Jamaica. Its mission is "to offer its students opportunities for academic success and professional advancement through a rich and diverse curriculum".

The college was founded in 1835 through the Lady Mico Charity, one of four teacher training institutions established during this period in the British colonies and the only one to survive until the present. Mico University College is thus the oldest teacher training institution in the Western Hemisphere.

MicoUniversity College was established as a non-denominational Christian institution that caters both to male and female students. Over the years the institution has undergone expansion and development both physically and in its academic programmes.


Specialties



Mico’s Strategic Plan is an initiative endorsed by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Culture which seeks to rationalise teacher education in Jamaica and enabling the college, in collaboration with UWI, to become a degree granting institution. In December 2003, The Mico in collaboration with the University Council of Jamaica (UCJ) graduated its first batch of students who earned a B.Sc. in Guidance and Counselling



Bachelors and Masters degree programmes in Language and Literacy, Information Studies, Literature and Literacy, Guidance and Counselling, Physical Education, Social Studies, School Management and Leadership, Special Education, Early Childhood Education, geography And Environmental Studies, Heritage Studies, History and Culture, Arts in Education, Science Education, Mathematics Education, Industrial Technology and Family and Consumer Science.

The heritage Cafe' is the ideal place for socialization, jus to sit and enjoy the beauty of the surrounding. The fullly integrated socialization area with build in electricl plugs that allow you to use your laptop and browse the web at any point in of the day.

THE GLEN OWN HALL & THE MILLS HALL

The Glen Owen & Mills Hall are the two hall of residents that are located on The Mico University College Campus ,both accounted for over 450 males students. The Mills Hall ,popular know as the home of the Bishop, Author Grant, Boxton house account for over 300 student in cluding the President of the student Council, Mr. Danva Dunchan. The Glen Owen which accounts for over 150 students and bear the name as the home for Rogers & Lushingston House(Colour Red & Blue Respectively). The Glen Owen which take its name from The Mico University College first black President Sir. Glen Owen.



ERROL MILLER HALL

The Errol Miller Hall for resident's which is located on Arnold Road, Account for over eight hundred females students. The newly develop of the Blocks building was created to facilitates over 200 stuents with its spacious facilities to ensure that the standards of the Mico University College remain the number one teacher training institution in the western emisphere.

Cricket Field

The Mico University Provides a well develop cricket field for it players to conduct their trainning. this has result in numerous victories both inter-college and the UTECH classic cricket competition.
